Project Overview
Welcome to The American Guides Project, a place to share the stories & memories of small town America. This growing collection of online resources is designed for use by every American - from students & teachers to history buffs and heritage tourists.
Going well beyond the watered-down popular histories of today, we bring you the local perspective, the real people, traditions, and events which have formed our communities, and our nation, often in their own words. We recognize the valuable heritage, both natural and historic, which exists in almost every corner of America. We also invite your participation in the most ambitious community heritage project since the New Deal.
See our Updates page for latest additions; we have 5,000 pages (soon to be over 31,000) drawn from the famous American Guide Series, plus a growing collection of local content from Colorado. We also seek your public domain, or copyrighted works (with proper permissions), and we're planning other local programs to help celebrate & promote local heritage. The Project is an educational charity, tax-exempt under IRC 501(c)(3).
To support our community heritage education efforts, you might also wish to consider:
A tax-deductible Donation or a Sponsorship to help fund our research & other operations.
Purchase anything at Amazon, but start from our Amazon Bookstore (we then earn a %).
Order a GPS Heritage Hunt from our commercial publishing partner, Heritage Hunt Publishing.
For Email Marketing you can trust
On our Heritage Sites, we publish existing, copyrighted and public domain works, plus new contributions from local authors & residents. The whole idea is to make local American heritage accessible to everyone.
Critically-acclaimed & often reprinted (see About The Guides), the American Guides can take you back to the forgotten America - the late 1930's, before the impacts of a world war & mass globalization. These works included contributions from many of our literary greats, such as Bellow, Eiseley, Richard Wright, Zora Hurston, John Cheever, as well as many regular American citizens. Our goal is to publish every one of the 31,000 pages - this will be supplemented by maps & historic photos, creating a premier online guide to the heritage of America.
Other Programs in Development
We are interested in working with local heritage institutions, individuals and businesses on many levels, including creating local history podcasts (Heritage Radio), broadcast videos, or local heritage film festivals. Contact us with your own ideas!.
